In theory, our generation should be happier than those that have come before it. Labour saving devices mean that we have less work to do around the home, and improvements in technology mean that a lot of work can be automated too. Instead of hard manual labour, or tedious data entry, most of us are lucky enough to have interesting knowledge jobs – and the freedom to socialise on the job, staying connected to our friends via Facebook or Twitter. We also have unprecedented access to on-demand entertainment, a wider range of foods and cheaper travel too.
Despite all of this, many of us aren’t happy. Common complaints are being stressed at work, unsure of our financial situation, and jealous of the perceived success of our peers. Instead of being grateful for what we have, we covet our friend’s Ecko jeans and Barbour jacket.
Happiness is important not just because being happy feels nice, but because happy people tend to be healthier, live longer, and perform better at work. If you can learn to be happy now, then that happiness will improve your performance and well being – creating even more things to be happy about!
Fortunately, it doesn’t take much to improve your state of mind. Try the following tips for leading a happier, healthier life.
4 tips for living a happier life
1. Do Something Nice for Someone
Even if you aren’t well off yourself, there are always others in a worse situation. Donate a small amount of money to a local charity, give a little bit of your time to a local conservation project, or use your skills to volunteer as an accountant or secretary for a local kid’s sports group. Helping others will make them feel happier, and will make you feel good about yourself too.
2. Get Some Exercise
Not only does exercise have health benefits, it can make you feel good in the short term too. A good workout leaves you feeling energized and happy, and gives you a strong sense of accomplishment. The act of putting on some men’s countrywear and going for a nice energizing hike through the hills will give you a renewed sense of purpose and energy.
3. Get Rid of Negative Influences
Don’t waste your time with people that drag you down. Choose your friends wisely. Associating with happy, successful people will help you to become happy and successful too. That doesn’t mean you should ditch good friends that are having a rough time, but if people do nothing except pull you down, it might be time to re-evaluate their importance in your life.
4. Treat Yourself
It’s easy to become so externally focused that you forget about yourself and your needs. Everyone needs to take some time out to recharge their batteries. If you’re working hard, and then spending your free time doing stuff for other people, you’re letting yourself down. Devote some time to your hobbies. Go see a football match. Buy some more men’s countrywear so that you can go on a long hiking trip. Treat yourself to a new Barbour jacket or a set of Vibrams. You deserve it.
