5 Ways To Relax Without Using Prescription Drugs

According to the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), in 2010 approximately 16 million Americans used prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons. The most commonly abused prescription drugs include opioids, morphine derivatives, stimulants and depressants. Many people abuse prescription drugs for various reasons. For example, they may use Benzodiazepines to relax.

However, there are better ways to relax without using prescription drugs. These techniques can improve the quality of life, reduce stress symptoms and help cope with emotional or health problems.

Why Using Natural Techniques is a Better Option

With the daily demands such as work, children, it’s easy to take a moment to take a pill rather than take a natural approach. However, the benefits of relaxing without using prescription drugs far outweigh whatever temporary fixes a prescription drug provides.

Relaxation techniques lower the stress in your body because:

  • Slows your breathing and heart rate
  • Improves the blood flow to your muscles
  • Decreases tension
  • Diminishes chronic pain
  • Reduces negative feelings such as anger or frustration
  • Improves concentration and the ability to work through problems
  • Diverts your attention away from your problems

Besides many of these techniques are free or offered at a reduced rate at fitness centers or health clubs. For example, use yoga, massages, or meditation either at home or a fitness center to relax.

5 Ways To Relax Without Using Prescription Drugs

1. Autogenic relaxation

Autogenic, which refers to something that comes from with a person, is a type of relaxation technique that uses visual imagery and body awareness. Using this technique involves picking a calming word or phrase and silently repeating them to relax and elevate tension.

A person imagines he or she is in a peaceful setting such as a garden and repeats the word or phrase. As he or she continuously repeats their keyword and concentrates on slowing their breathing and heart rate.

2. Visualization Process

If you want to relax without using prescription drugs, try visualization. Visualization requires an individual to think of images such as a peaceful setting and mentally takes a journal to their favorite, calming place. This technique typically requires a person to sit in a quiet place and closing his or her eyes.

For example, if a person loves the beach, he may imagine himself taking a walk to the beach and feeling the warm sun on his skin. As he enjoys his day at the beach, he smells the salty water, listens to the waves crashing and feels the sand between his toes.

3. Progressive relaxation

Progressive relaxation focuses on the muscles to relax each group of tensed muscles. The technique involves a two-step process. An individual must rest on a flat surface. Starting at the head, he or she must tense the muscles in that area for five seconds then relax for at least 30 seconds. Slowly, the person works every group of muscles until he or she works down to the toes.

4. Taking a Breathing Break

Deep breathing is another great way to relax without using prescription drugs. During a five to 10 minute break, an individual should sit in a comfortable chair and close his or her eyes. Consciously take a couple of deep breaths then exhale. For the rest of the time take deep, slow breaths while relaxing the stomach and exhale until their no breaths left the diaphragm and repeat.

5. Exercise

Exercise can be an intense workout for 30 to 45 minutes or a five minute walk. Physical exertion helps relax the body and clear the mind.
