In the modern age it is far too easy to let stress overwhelm you. I found myself suffering from depression and exhaustion due to working far too hard and not looking after myself. It can be very easy to let work get on top of you. The importance of certain tasks with the added pressures of deadlines often start to rule your head, and very quickly you might find that your body starts paying the price for constant abuse brought on by stressful work situations. As soon as you start to feel run down your work will suffer too.
Put Yourself First in Order to Achieve Your Best Work
After having to take time off work to recover and start working my way back on my feet again I decided it was time to evaluate my work and home life situation. While I love my job it was very important to try and reduce the pressure I was putting on myself in day to day situations. After consulting with my boss I was able to negotiate working from home once a week and having time at work where I was not disturb, purely for relaxation. After speaking with the occupational therapist it was recommended that I had a new chair and foot rest and my blind was also replaced as the old one was broken causing problems with reflections on my screen.
Without You the Work Cannot Get Done
After a week off doing nothing but sleeping I was dreading returning to work. Thanks to the support of my employees it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. With my fresh outlook, making myself a priority over work, I was determined to improve the situation. As a pick-me-up I treated myself to some new clothing to wear at work, focusing on comfort as well as looking professional. I even choose some comfortable underwear so I wouldn’t suffer from back ache and have straps digging into my shoulders adding to my general aches and pains.
Welcoming Nap Time
I now have a ten minute power nap at work, made possible thanks to my new chair. I choose clothing that is comfortable, always take in a warm cardigan and get my head down at the end of my dinner break. I find this rejuvenates the brain a little and helps me to refocus for the afternoon push. Having well-fitting underwear also helps with finding comfort while trying to sleep. Even if I don’t manage to actually nap, I still find the ten minutes of quiet is extremely beneficial.
Once I get home I treat myself to either half an hour of meditation or another nap depending on how stressed out I am. With kids running around the house this can be difficult but I found by persuading a friend or a relative to take the girls out for me if they have no clubs on I am able to unwind just enough.
Making Yourself Comfortable
Being a busy working mother I no longer dress just to impress. I love to look professional and well maintained, but now I shop for comfort too. I have put away my towering heels (except for those rare nights out with my husband), I wear clothing that is not too tight fitting and allows me to move be it a bra or a suit. I need to be able to unwind as quickly as possible in order to get through the day, so shopping sensibly helps me to do this with relative ease. I feel that by putting myself first I am able to give my all to my job and find time to relax and enjoy my down time, helping me stay fitter and healthier in the process.
