It may sound strange to mention a sugar detox diet as a stress management strategy but when it comes to emotions, moods, and our overall mental and emotional stability, our diet has a major influence. It’s often the last thing on people’s minds as a possible solution. And it makes it even harder that when we feel stress we often reach for the chocolate and sugar rather than the opposite.
But as a long-term stress management strategy, a sugar detox diet may just be what you need to find that inner stability once again.
The Affects Of Sugar
When discussing sugar, it’s not just the candy and cakes but excess fruit, junk foods, processed foods and heavy grains like wheat, barley, rye, and rice and all the products made out of them. Lots of foods we eat convert to sugar once they hit the blood stream. This causes various hormones in our body to react and causes a chain reaction.
Blood also feeds the brain so the excess sugar combined with raging hormones can have a direct impact on emotions and thoughts, the ability to think clearly, feeling like you have a heavy brain fog in your head, lack of energy, feelings of frustration and irritability, and the list goes on.
The good thing is we can have control over this and get our bodies, emotions and thoughts back into balance. This is achievable by following a sugar detox diet for a few weeks. After that it’s easier to maintain a healthier eating plan so in the long term, you will feel more balanced and energetic overall.
A Sugar Detox Diet – Two Choices
There are basically two choices, you can go ‘cold turkey’ and cut out every bit of sugar in your diet. Some people prefer to do this but if your current eating plan is bad, you might not want to take this path because you may get some detox symptoms like headaches, irritability, and lack of energy for the first week.
The other choice is to gradually reduce your sugar intake over a period of three weeks. This suits most people better because the detox symptoms are not so bad and are easier to cope with.
Cut out all your refined sugars, the processed foods and junk foods first. Replace all those foods with fresh vegetables, good quality meats, and some healthy fat sources like avocado and olive oil. Once you do that reduce your fruit and grain intake. So cut down on breads, pastas and rice.
If you live like this for a few weeks you will definitely notice that you can cope with stress and life in a much more positive way. Diet is essential to the mind and emotions so don’t discount it as a possible solution to your stress and life issues.
