Everyone feels stressed from time to time. However, long term or chronic stress can cause one to feel overloaded, burned out, and even physically ill. Stress relief activities are important in the quest to maintain a healthy mind and body. Here are some stress relief activities that you can try from the comfort of your own home.
5 Effective Stress Relief Activities That Can Be Done At Home
1. Meditation
Meditation is one of the most effective from all stress relief activities – it´s a great way to calm the mind and body. Find a quiet space in your home. Meditation can last anywhere from five minutes to a few hours. It is up to you. However, it may be easier for a beginner to start slowly and then work up to longer sessions. Sit in a relaxed position and close your eyes. Start to become aware of your breath. Is it fast or slow? Try to slow it down. Breathe in through your nose, and out through your mouth. As you breathe out, focus on a word or a mantra that will help you to clear out all the noise and thoughts that are camped out in your mind. For example, you can think of the word “calm” as your exhale. The key is to clear your mind, and help you to be mindful of what is going on in the here and now. A stressed out mind tends to focus on details of the past or the future. Meditation brings the mind back to the present.
2. Start a Journal
Writing can be a great stress relief activity. It can also serve as a helpful tool of self-exploration. All you need is a pen and paper. Let your thoughts naturally flow out of you, and don’t worry about grammar or how it all fits together. Simply write whatever comes to mind. You can set a specific time for your journaling, or you can decide to write whenever the mood strikes you. There are no real rules for keeping a personal journal. After all, this journal is for you and only you.
3. Take a Walk
Physical exercise can do wonders to help manage stress. Most people may already know this. However, if you are at home and do not necessarily want to engage in intense cardio, why not go for a walk around the block instead? Walking in a relaxed manner can help improve your mood, and release emotional stress. You can choose to walk alone or ask a family member or friend to join you. In addition, you might try muscle relaxation for further stress relief. While you are walking, tense your muscles for a few steps, and then slowly let go of the tension. You will be amazed at how a short walk can change your perspective and lower stress levels.
4. Read a Book
Reading can be extremely relaxing. Curling up in bed for the evening and indulging in a good book can take your mind off your own problems. Whether it’s a work of fiction that takes you to another time and place, or a presidential biography, or a book on how to install ceiling fans. Reading helps you to focus your mind, concentrate, and positively exercise your mind.
5. Take a Hot Bath
Turn your bathroom into a spa. Light candles, play soft music, turn the lights down, and run a hot bath. A bath can be very therapeutic. It not only relieves tired muscles, but can also serve as a reminder to slow down. It is also an opportunity for quiet time. Bathing helps calm the nervous system, and can reduce the aches and pains of many illnesses.
