We all know that health care can vary from country to country, and the Far East is somewhat famous for using some weird stress relievers.
Now, whilst some of these weird stress relievers may not suit everyone (especially if you’re squeamish of afraid to be a little adventurous) it’s always good to know what’s out there! After all, it may make you appreciate your (by comparison) ‘normal’ back massage.
10 Weird Stress Relievers and Health Treatments from Asia
1. Experiences Your Senses With a Floating Massage
This weird stress relieving technique involves floating on water. Whilst you lay there – there are relaxing sounds played to you as well as slight tidings of the water. Think of it as being rocked to sleep. It’s definitely one of treatments on this list that is less daunting!
2. Thai Massage
A Thai massage isn’t the most conventional form of relaxation and stress relief – and after entering the massage parlor and after sampling only a few second – you may start to wonder whether you’re being relaxed… or being tortured.
Traditionally a Thai massage will be a full body one, tugging and pulling all different areas of your body in order to push them and realign them back into place. Yes – it may be painful at the time, but you’ll notice yourself bounding around the next day.
3. Thai Foot Massage
Similar to the Thai massage – the Thai foot massage is just as daunting. We all know that in certain holistic theories, different parts of your foot render effect of different parts of your body – and the Thai massage works with this concept. Don’t expect it to be painless though!
4. Bake in a Korean Sauna
Unlike the Western saunas we’re used to – these Korean saunas are enjoyed wearing a special clothing piece provided by a spa. Kind of like a blanket! You’re left to sit in the clay room, to enjoy the heat and sweat out any worries or stress you might have. Sounds good to us!
5. Let Leeches Suck Away Your Worries
If you’re feeling like you may have any toxins inside you – then many hospitals and spas offer a leeches treatment. The idea behind it is that these bugs will suck your blood (ewww!) and suck out any toxins while they’re at it.
This treatment Manaka is something that may seem like a weird stress reliever at first – but actually follows the same logic as acupuncture. By targeting certain pressure points, your treatment assistant will tap certain key pressure points on your body, and literally ‘tap the pain away’. It’s certainly bizarre – but I have on strong feeling that it works!
7. Hot Suction Cups
Now – if you’re planning on hitting the beach the day after – this treatment might not be for you – as it can leave red circular marks (that look a little like love bites!) on your skin afterwards. Maybe not the most glamorous look! But if you plan on being covered up – this weird stress relieving treatment might be great for you. It involves intense heated suction on your skin.
8. Red Wine Bathing
Now, for those looking for something a bit different – but not dangerous or risky – this is going to be right up your street. As one of the more expensive treatments on this list, you’ll want to get saving for this one too. I’m not sure what the benefits behind this weird stress reliever – but it was offered at multiple spas I visited.
9. Human Placenta Facial
It is a common fact that the placenta is a highly rich form of nutrion and vitamins (after all, it’s what keeps a baby healthy during pregnancy) but in Asia you can actually receive placenta facials. Quite a weird stress reliever and health treatment concept – but this is an extremely ‘in-demand’ treatment – with a high price tag to match. If you’re still unsure though – don’t worry. All placentas used are from full-term, healthy babies, with written consent from the mothers.
10. Enjoy a ‘poop’ Facial
Is placenta isn’t your thing, then why not enjoy a facial with the aid of Nightingale poo? Apparently it’s how Geishas keep their skin clear (and they have very clear skin!) so I might be sold on this one. That’s if you can stand the smell of course!
It really doesn’t matter where you are staying in Asia. Whether it’s a beach hotel in Phi Phi Island or maybe you are having a relaxing villa break in Bali you are bound to come across at least one of these weird stress relievers. The question remains ‘Will you be brave enough to try one?’….Trust me they are worth it!
