The health benefits of juicing at home have been touted for decades. If you’re among the many who still haven’t bought the right juicer yet, though, you’re not alone. There are some who still don’t understand the power a juicer can offer. Take a moment to learn a little more about the potential health benefits of juicing at home.
The Health Benefits of Juicing at Home
What is Juicing?
Juicing is the process of taking fresh fruits and vegetables, then putting them in a juicer to create a product that is as healthy as it is delicious. Wondering how it works? It depends a bit on the juicer itself, but in most cases, you don’t even have to peel the fruit before you put it in. In fact, it doesn’t even have to be fruit at all. Instead, you can use a variety of different ingredients like carrots and celery.
In most cases, you will have to chop the fruit up a bit to get it in the juicer. From there, you just turn your juicer on and let it do all of the work for you. It will separate the fiber of the fruit or vegetable you’ve just put in from the juice itself. Then it should spit the juice out into a jug.
Health Benefits of Juicing at Home
Still not sure this sounds like something you might enjoy? One quick look at the health benefits of juicing at home should convince you.
1. More Nutrients to Meet Your Needs
Juice means you’re actually consuming the raw fruit, and that means more nutrients to meet your needs. Scientific studies have reported a number of different health benefits to juicing at home. Many have suggested that it means clearer thought processes, probably due to the overabundance of all the right nutrients in your system.
2. Weight Loss
For some, it has even meant the key to weight loss. The trick there is that the juice is helping you stay full longer between meals, so you’re not tempted to sneak a snack in here and there.
3. Better Sleep
Another benefit many people experience is that you tend to get a better sleep quality than you did before you started juicing. Again, the great new nutrients are entirely responsible for this change in your behavior.
4. Better Overall Appearance
You may notice a change in your overall appearance as well. Your skin may seem softer than you ever thought possible, and your hair and nails may start to grow fairly quickly.
5. Better Immune Functioning and Overall Health
Additionally, you might notice better immune functioning thanks to the nutrient content, too. Some studies have even suggested a greater rate of protection from serious health conditions like cancer and diabetes as a result of juicing. And if you are concerned about keeping your heart healthy, juicing has been shown to regulate your blood pressure.
While it’s clear that juicing at home can offer so much to your body and your life, but there are a few things you may want to consider if you’re going to start juicing.
- First, remember that you should only make as much juice as you can drink at any one time. Fresh juice grows bacteria very quickly.
- Second, keep your juices a bit pulpier than you may buy them in the store. It contains valuable fiber that your body needs to stay full on a regular basis.
Healthy Home Juicing Recipes
Fresh fruits and vegetables can be combined in an endless number of combinations to make delicious juices. As a home juicer for the past 5 years, I’ve tried numerous recipes and here are just a few of my favorites. And you can turn any of these juice recipes into a smoothie simply by combining one cup of your extracted juice with a 1/2 cup low fat or Greek plain yogurt and 1 1/2 cups of ice cubes. Blend in a blender until smooth (use the puree setting).
Taste of the Tropics Juice
This recipe will make about 2 small glasses of juice so it has been a staple of the morning routine for my husband and me.
Put the following through your juicer: 2 peeled kiwis, 1 peeled orange, 8 stemmed strawberries, half a mango peeled and sliced, and about one cup of fresh pineapple chunks. Mix together with a 1/2 cup of canned coconut water and pour into two small glasses.
Great Green Juice
This juice is a great source of calcium, iron, and potassium because spinach is a main ingredient. By combining fruits and vegetables, this juice has the perfect balance of sweet and savory.
Extract the following in your juicer: 20 green grapes, 2 large carrots, 2 granny smith apples, 4 large stalks of kale, 2 celery stalks, 1 cucumber, 2 large handfuls of fresh spinach. Makes two small glasses.
Dr. Oz’s Green Juice
As a proponent of healthy eating, Dr. Oz has raved about this green juice recipe for years. It is packed with vitamins, high in fiber, and low on calories making it the perfect choice when you want a healthy way to start your day. The only drawback that I’ve found with this recipe is the large number of ingredients. Personally, I am in a hurry in the morning so I unless I get all these ingredients ready the night before, it just doesn’t happen.
Either puree in a blender or extract through your juicer: 2 cups spinach, 1/2 cucumber, 1/4 head of celery, 1/2 bunch parsley, 1 bunch mint, 3 carrots, 2 apples, 1/4 orange, 1/4 lime, 1/4 lemon, 1/4 pineapple. Mix thoroughly. Makes about 28 – 30 ounces of juice.
Healthy Fruit Juice
Packed with vitamins A, B, C and E, this juice is a great snack option. If you want to fuel every part of your body, this healthy juice will do just that.
1 medium apple, 2 medium ripe pears, and 1/2 cup of pitted fresh or frozen cherries should be blended in a blender or extracted using a juicer. Makes two 1 cup servings.
