Gratitude is an important part of developing a positive mindset. We tend to automatically focus on what we don’t have in our lives or what we haven’t accomplished yet. Practicing gratitude helps overcome this tendency and keeps our mindset positive.
There are several techniques you can use to incorporate gratitude into your daily life.
- Make a gratitude list when you get up each morning. Set a goal of listing six or more items that you are grateful for. It can be helpful to write this list by hand rather than typing it in order to increase your connection to what you’re writing. However, if you prefer to type, do it! The important thing is to make writing gratitude lists a daily habit.
- Create a gratitude jar. Decorate an old jar with your favorite colors and designs. Keep scraps of paper near the jar. Every time you experience something you are grateful for, write it on a scrap of paper and put it in the jar. When the jar gets full, open it and reread the scraps.
- Get in the habit of saying “Thank you” and meaning it. Many people are in too much of a hurry to thank waiters and other service people. Brighten up someone’s day by thanking everyone you meet for their help.

Daily meditation can help you to develop a positive mindset, stay relaxed and calm. Many people don’t take the time to meditate because they think that it’s too time-consuming or because they don’t know how to meditate. Many people live in a constant state of anxiety because of overexposure to news. School shootings and other violent events can make you feel like you’re one step away from being killed or losing a loved one to a senseless act of violence.
Part of the solution to this problem, of course, is to limit your exposure to news. However, anxiety about your safety is often based on real concerns that are magnified out of proportion. In order to keep your mindset positive, honor your anxiety. Instead of telling yourself you’re being ridiculous, take precautions to protect yourself and your family from harm while trusting that those precautions will help.
For example, if you are worried about your children’s safety at school, make an appointment with the principal to talk about the school’s safety plan. If you fear being robbed at night, install an alarm.
The key to dealing with anxiety about your safety is to do what you can to protect yourself and your family and then let it go. No matter how many precautions you take, you cannot absolutely guarantee your safety. However, if you do everything you can to protect yourself, you can minimize the risk of serious harm. Thus, there’s no point in worrying once you’ve already done everything you can to prevent problems.
