The best natural ‘pick me up’ has to be exercise. It is free, it makes you feel good, and it makes you look good! My favorite exercise to boost my happiness is running. The benefits of running, and other exercises that get your heart pumping, are not simply just improved fitness. Exercise has many additional benefits that will make you happy. Here are 5 ways that exercise makes you happy.
How Exercise Makes You Happy
Exercise makes you happy by relinquishing your mind from stress and anxiety. Stresses tend to be work related. In the dog eat dog world that we live in our insecure natures are under constant attack from worries and concerns about money, friends, relationships, status etc…
Exercise is a great way to release stress. When you go out for a run at the end of a hard day, your thoughts wonder and you can think more clearly away from all the constant stimulation of modern day life. You can sort many problems and worries out in your head whilst navigating through the streets of your home town.
The physiological reason why exercise makes you happy and is so good for stress management is that when you exercise your body releases ‘feel good’ hormones, called endorphins, into your brain. Regular exercisers could be referred to as endorphin junkies!
Exercise makes you happy by introducing you to new friends. I recently moved to a new town, away from the circle of friends that I had built over a number of years. Participating in team sports is a great way to meet new, like minded people. I joined the local running club and I have made loads of new friends that has helped me settle into my new life.
The sport gives you a shared interest to talk about and because you all have the same goals and purpose you get a feeling of being part of a team. We are social creatures and we all love being part of a team.
If you are feeling lonely, or have just moved to a new area like me, get out there and join a sports club. I guarantee that everyone will be friendly and you will make many new friends
Exercise makes you happy because it makes you look great. If I am looking fit and healthy then this makes me feel happier inside. I think this is the same for everyone. We all want to look good, primarily so we can reproduce. It is part and parcel of being human.
All exercise burn s calories which helps avoid weight gain, or aids weight loss. Some forms of exercise are better than others for improving your bodies shape. I would recommend exercise that works your entire body, mixing cardio training and weight training. Some form of resistance training is really a must if you want to work on getting that Hollywood look!
Exercise makes you happy because it boosts your energy levels. The Human body was not designed to be fidgeting around on cushioned chairs and staring at PC monitors for 8 hours a day.
Our bodies were created for hunter gathering, and protecting ourselves from dangerous creatures. A result of this paradigm shift in the makeup of our lives is low energy levels.
Participating in regular exercise increases muscle strength and improves endurance. This is not just beneficial for competitive sport, it will mean that you will have more energy to go about your daily activities.
Exercise makes you happy because you get great sleep. Regular exercise helps you both fall asleep faster, and sleep deeper. You will notice a benefit from exercising cardiovasularly 3 times a week. It is important to get the heart pumping so you should prioritise exercises such as running, swimming or cycling.
It should be noted though that exercising close to bedtime can have the reverse affect. Exercising excites the central nervous system and releases hormones like adrenaline into the body which need to be removed by the body before you can sleep. A few years ago I trained 3 times a week from 9-10pm and I use to really struggle to get to sleep before midnight. Not great on a work night!
As you see there are several ways that exercise makes you happy. It’s time to get off the couch and get some exercise.
