The typical working week can be stressful and exhausting. I don’t know about you, but on any given weeknight I’m exhausted, so after a full week of mentally grueling tasks I’m ready to collapse. So for your own sanity, it’s important to use your time wisely to unwind at the weekend.
Sure, sometimes you have people to see and places to be, chores to do and maybe kids to look after – but no matter how busy you are at the weekend it’s really important to fit in some ‘me’ time where you can. It’ll make you feel much happier and healthier in the long run. Here are some ideas you can use to unwind at the weekend.
Learn How to Unwind at the Weekend to Get Rid of Stress
1. Get Exercising
So you’d think exercising wouldn’t be a great way to relax and unwind at the weekend – but it’s actually one of the best ways. Exercise reduces stress levels, helps you to sleep better and boosts your self esteem. It releases endorphins, so when you finish exercising you get a rush that makes you feel great about yourself.
If the gym’s not for you, you can try group sports such as netball or tennis, classes like zumba or aerobics or even just fit it into your everyday activities such as walking where possible and taking the stairs instead of the lift.
2. Have a Long Soak
Run yourself a nice hot bubble bath, stick on some candles and some music or grab a good book or magazine. It’s great if you can completely switch off from everything – but if you’re not able to do that, then at least a bath gives you the time to think about the day’s activities and put them behind you. So make sure you’ve done all of your chores beforehand so you’re not worrying about them or watching the clock.
3. Catch up with a Friend
Socializing is another great way to unwind at the weekend – whether it’s meeting a friend face-to-face for a coffee, having a good natter on the phone or simply writing an email or letter. It’s also a great exercise for putting your stresses into perspective and seeing things in a different way. Remember, a problem shared is a problem halved.
4. Get a Good Night’s Sleep
The average adult in the UK has just six hours of sleep a night and over 30 per cent of people report suffering from insomnia. Sleep can have a significant impact on our mental well being, our ability to concentrate and our mood throughout the day.
It’s true that a good night’s sleep can leave you feeling more positive and upbeat; the Great British Sleep Survey found that people who have regularly disturbed sleep patterns are three times more likely to have a low mood compared to people who sleep well. Don’t feel like you need eight hours though, some people will find they only need six while others will feel fatigued if they don’t get 10 hours a night.
5. Have a Beauty Treatment
Treating yourself to a massage or facial treatment is the ultimate in indulgence. You’ll feel completely relaxed and it’s a great way to spoil yourself.
Get in as many of the above as you can in your weekend and you’ll feel relaxed, well-rested and raring to go on Monday morning.
