Life is filled with unpredictable twists and turns. In many ways, it is like a rollercoaster. One moment you are trudging along and everything seems to be moving in slow motion. In an instant, the pace picks up and you are speeding through peaks and valleys, holding on desperately for the ride of your life.
It is easy to get bogged down in the monotony of daily life and overwhelmed by the chaos of the moments where everything seems like it is being held together by a thread. But there is great beauty in all of these moments. To achieve personal growth it is important to take the time to stop and appreciate them.
When you truly appreciate the little things in life, the small miracles that happen every day, you become much more aware of the world around you. This makes for a significantly richer experience than you can achieve by constantly dwelling on the big things.
There is tremendous beauty in the world. Sometimes you need to actively engage in exercises that will force you to take the time to see all the wonders there are to behold in everyday life. The following tips will help you achieve personal growth by soaking in the small moments.
5 Great Ways to Achieve Personal Growth
Take Care of a Plant and Watch it Grow
In many ways, the life cycle of a plant is like a microcosm of human life. It starts as a tiny seedling that needs to be nurtured and loved. As it starts to grow, it is fragile and delicate. But over time, with steady water, sunlight, and care, it can transform into a beautiful, vibrant, living organism.
You can apply this metaphor to your daily life. Your passions need to be nurtured in the same way that a plant does. They need constant attention and care in order to develop fully. By devoting even a small amount of time to feeding your passion every day, you can easily achieve personal growth and a level of mastery that will bring you tremendous joy.
It is easy to get caught up in the daily grind of life and neglect your passions. However, when this happens, you may find that your passions wither and die like a neglected plant. If you commit to carving out even just a half hour a day to devote to your passion, you will be amazed at how rapidly your abilities grow. Once this becomes part of your daily routine, you will look forward to this time as sacred, and it will become an important component to your identity.
Look at Life through a Bug’s Eyes
Have you ever taken the time to stop and think about the way other creatures view the world? I often see my cat sprawled out in the front yard, basking in the sunlight. She looks glorious and content. I often wonder if she actually feels that way.
Pets are lovable parts of our lives, and it is easy to try to imagine their perspective. But what about an irritating creature like a bug? Many of us find bugs to be nuisances – they fly around the house, land on our food, even leave us with itchy bites. How are they viewing the world around them?
I would imagine that a creature as tiny as a bug would see tremendous wonder in many of the small things we take for granted. After all, an object like a pint glass towers over a bug, almost like a glistening crystal castle.
There are many ordinary moments in our lives which are actually quite wondrous if we take the time to appreciate them – a cool, brisk breeze on a summer day; the first snowflakes that land on your face on a cold, winter day; the soft, fuzzy blanket that you curl up with as you watch a movie on your couch. When you truly stop to appreciate the small things, they can greatly enrich your life and help you to achieve personal growth.
Small Efforts at Exercising Add Up
I’m not a gym rat. I wish I was. But life can be hectic, and I have other passions which demand my time at the expense of a solid workout at the end of a long day of work. But exercise is an important way to stimulate your mind, body, and spirit. It is important to build this into your routine.
If you find that you lack the time for regular exercise, you can get creative to become a little more active:
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator
- Walk to the store instead of getting in your car to drive 8 blocks
- Spend a few minutes stretching when you wake up in the morning
- Take a break at work and go for a short walk
These moments will add up, and they will make you feel much better physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Fall in Love with Your Daily Routine
There are two ways to look at your daily routine. You can view it as monotonous and dull, or you can find moments in your routine that foster beautiful interactions with the world around you.
Before I leave the house for work every morning, my cat follows me around the house. She goes back and forth as I move from the bathroom to the bedroom to the kitchen. It is a beautiful moment when we get to spend a little time together and she gets some much-needed attention. And it is nice to receive that type of love and affection first thing in the morning.
That is just one example of a part of my daily routine that brings me joy and helps me to achieve personal growth. I can think of many others. How can you change the way you view your routine to notice the hidden beauty in your day?
Soaking it All In
I’d like to end this with some food for thought from one of my favorite childhood movies. This advice may come from an iconic slacker, but it still imparts great wisdom which we should all heed:
Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. ~ Ferris Bueller
