Have you ever wondered who you really are? What are the things that make you an individual?
We all have our social identities; you may be a loving partner in a relationship, a caring parent to your kids or a hard working employee, but these are only part of you as a person. They don’t signify who you really are inside. Knowing your inner self will enable you to have a better understanding of your true purpose, motivations, values, visions, beliefs and goals. These are the underlying facts that you have to discover for yourself and not what other people have told you.
Learn To Get In Touch With Your Inner Self
Self awareness and introspection are the essential elements that enable you to get in touch with your inner self. Even if you posses those characteristics mentioned above, it is important to note that your inner self discovery will never end because it is a lifetime journey.
The value of discovering your inner self
You may not be aware of this but your inner self is different from the identities you portray in your social environment. People commonly see their own selves playing a certain role as part of the human life such as a partner, friend or employee but these are not their inner selves. Some people spend a lifetime in building themselves around identities that can be easily taken away and as a result, they often feel completely lost because of lack in awareness about who they really are inside. People who haven’t found their inner selves will have difficulty in expressing their own dreams, visions and goals outside their identities.
For instance, a person who established her identity as a daughter will perceive her entire life as a daughter. She will act according to ways that would make her parents feel good. She will spend most of her time with her parents; she will do things for the sake of her parents and abandon the things in her life that would make them upset. Whenever she makes important decisions like her love life or career, she seeks her parent’s approval first before taking any further action.
Her life revolves around her parents but her inner self is not just about being a daughter to her parents. There will be a time when her parents will finally get out of her life but it will leave her feeling devastated and completely lost. Her life will be in a state of confusion since she established her identity as a daughter to her parents but now they are gone.
Think of it like when a pet bird has finally escaped from her cage. The bird will fly freely but she doesn’t have any idea where to go or if she will ever survive in the wild since most of her time was spent inside the cage under the utmost care of her owner. When people become excessively attached to one of their identities, they are more prone of having an identity crisis later in life when that particular identity disappears.
The value of discovering your inner self is to know that you are the one who is controlling your own life and living it for yourself. By knowing how to get in touch with your inner self, you will be able to define life the way you really want it to be and not by means of your identities or roles. If you haven’t found your inner self yet, it is most likely that you are still living by what others define you to be. You have to make your own goals and live by your own expectations. By knowing your inner self, you will start to live a conscious life.
Self-awareness is the key to your inner self
As mentioned earlier in this article, you will know your inner self by having self-awareness. Even though you are not fully aware of your inner self, it is possible that there are some sides of your inner self that are already revealed on your daily life in how you think about your identities. For instance, if you often commend yourself by being honest to your wife, then honesty is most likely part of your inner self.
It’s all right if you still don’t know how to get in touch with your inner self right now. Always remember that discovering your inner self takes a long time and before you know it, you may have already faced many experiences in your life. For instance, think about your self-awareness when you were just a 12-year old kid compared to what you are now. It is more likely that you will gain more self-awareness as you grow old.
Knowing your inner self by removing your identities
This activity will help you find out more about your inner self. Before we begin, you should first get rid of the different identities that you have now such as being a comrade, brother or any identity that’s closely associated with yourself. Just think of who you really are.
Grab a paper and answer the questions below. Write anything that comes to your mind.
- What is your purpose in life?
- What are the future goals or dreams you have set only for yourself in 1 to 10 years from now?
- What motivates you to keep going in your daily life?
- What are the values or qualities that are essential to you?
- Describe your beliefs about the world.
Answering these questions might be complicated for the first time and some people tend to answer them in relation to their social identities. For instance, family oriented individuals might answer these questions focusing more about caring for their family. When faced with this kind of situation, it is important to think outside your family for just a moment and think only about your personal self.
Here are some additional steps which will help you to get in touch with your inner self:
- Always have the passion to learn something new and grow from that knowledge
- Putting yourself in situations that you have never experienced before will increase your self-awareness
- Having more choices other than what you are told to do will help you discover what you really want for yourself
The steps mentioned above will guide you in searching for your inner self. Finding it is a slow process but once you discovered your inner self, you will be more conscious towards your actions and have a clearer understanding of who you really are as a human being.
