At the end of a work week, Friday is usually THE night to let loose and let go of all the stressors of the week that passed. Many would probably hang out with friends at a bar, eat out at a swanky restaurant, grab a cup of coffee then probably head out for a night of clubbing.
Depending on what you fancy, there are just so many options to do on a Friday night. If you think about it, some of these activities can be quite tiring too.
Consuming too much alcohol, for instance, does not offer utmost relaxation and may even make you get sick because it lowers the immune system.
Too much dancing can also tire your muscles and give you body aches. Lack of sleep from too much partying is not healthy too, as it will lead to more serious illnesses in the long run.
Assuming that this Friday night out does happen often, why not try to stay at home to relax on a Friday night? It is very different but you will appreciate the solace and peace it brings.
How To Relax On A Friday Night (Without Leaving Home)
The goal of this is make you relax on a Friday night, so that your body and mind will be rejuvenated and you can start a new week with enough rest. Read on this article for an evening of relaxation and inner peace.
Set up a small space or relaxation zone
Upon arriving home, start your journey to relax on a Friday night by setting up a small space or relaxation zone. The ideal place should be free of clutter and noise. Dim the lights according to your liking. Light up some incense or scented candles. Setting the ambience is a step to let your body adjust to the environment.
Change into comfortable clothes
A good way to relax on a Friday night is to change into comfortable clothes. Uptight work clothes just make you feel constricted. Sit comfortably in your relaxation zone.
Do meditation or yoga
Do some meditation by concentrating on your breathing, inhaling the good energy; exhaling all the anxieties of the week away. Slow deep breaths can actually lower blood pressure and heart rate. Just five minutes of meditation can already decrease some of the stress or negative thoughts you are feeling.
If you do yoga, try doing some moves and stretches that allow you to relax on a Friday night. There is the yogic breathing called pranayama breathing. With the right nostril closed by the thumb, inhale with your left nostril. Hold the breath, then cover the left nostril with your ring finger. Finally, exhale with your right nostril. Do this again starting on the right nostril.
Here is a sample yoga routine:
For two minutes, lie down on the floor with your legs up against the wall. This is called Vipariti Kirani pose.
Next, sit cross-legged, place your right hand on the left knee, then twist your upper body to the left. Let your gaze follow your body. Stay on one side for thirty seconds then switch to the right side.
Third is a minute or two of Child’s Pose. Sit on your heels, then lower your upper body forward together with your arms as your body reaches your knees and the floor. Doing yoga movements helps ease muscle tension.
For dinner, prepare something light and healthy
For dinner, try to prepare something light and healthy. Start with a salad with different green leafy vegetables, topped with some roasted walnuts, then drizzle with salad dressing of your choice (be it vinaigrette or creamy). For your main dish, have pasta with grilled chicken sautéed with bell peppers, mushrooms, and onions. You can add either a roasted or creamy tomato sauce.
Preparing something simple also makes you relax on a Friday night, because you would not have to fuss over too much preparation then cooking.
To end your meal, drink a cup of green tea with honey. Green tea is known to be a good source of L-Theanine, a chemical that helps relieve anger, while honey contains compounds that reduce brain inflammation, which helps fight depression and anxiety.
Take a warm bath
The next thing you can do is to take a warm bath. Warm showers help too, but not as effectively as a warm bath. The sudden immersion into the warm water makes the body relax faster. Adding some essential oils can not only smoothen your skin but also add to the relaxation you are feeling.
Here is a combination you can try:
- Put 10 drops of chamomile to relieve tension, 10 drops of mandarin to reduce blood pressure and 14 drops of lavender to soothe headaches.
- Soak yourself for thirty minutes to allow the oils to be absorbed by your body. Now, isn’t this just the ultimate in trying to relax on a Friday night?
- After your bath, you can choose to listen to some meditative or tranquil sounds or make a reflection in your journal to get you in the mood to sleep.
Write on a journal
Writing on a journal allows you to release whatever is pent up inside. This way, you admit to your feelings then move on to improving your state of mind.
Give yourself a hand massage
You can give yourself a hand massage by rubbing the area between the thumb and index finger with the thumb and index finger of your other hand. This is called acupressure.
You can proceed to massage your nape, temples and shoulders. As you may already know, this form of touch therapy relieves you from a week’s worth of stress. Hopefully, what you have been doing the whole night has made your sleep better.
You may have noticed that there was no television turned on or even a cellphone and other distracting gadget used. These are counterproductive to your goal of being able to relax on a Friday night, because a lit screen of a cellphone or TV stimulates your senses and your brain. Try just for one night to turn them off and just focus on getting a peaceful, worry-free night of rest.
Also, all the things that were suggested are things that you can do alone. Consider this “me time” as a way to relax on a Friday night, because being alone allows you to collect your thoughts and reflect without any outside influence. Try it out for yourself and see how a restful sleep can help you be more productive for the week ahead.
