1. Chamomile

Chamomile is the most common and widely used from all herbal sleep aids. Chamomile is probably most widely used herb to treat insomnia. Chamomile relieves stress and calms you down. 2. Valerian root

Valerian root is also an extremely popular among people who need to use herbal sleep aids. It relieves tensions and anxiety. Usually it is made into tea or used in a capsule. In some cases it can be addictive or cause hangovers.

3. Catnip

Probably you know catnip as it is used to get cats hyped up. But did you know, that catnip has an opposite effect on humans. Catnip has been used as a sleep aid for hundreds of years and it is also good for relieving upset stomach. You can drink catnip as a tea or stuff your pillow with dried catnip.

4. Kava kava

Kava kava has shown positive results to relieve anxiety and insomnia. Kava kava creates a calm feeling and helps to relax the body. Long term use can cause liver damage.

5. Lavender

Unlike many other herbal sleep aids, lavender is most often used as a form of aromatherapy. Many people who suffer from insomnia find aromatherapy very useful to get better sleep. Essential oil of lavender can be used in light rings, scented candles or you can add couple of drops in your bath. Many also use lavender in the form of tea. 6. Passion Flower

Another popular herbal sleeping aid is Passion flower. It is a very gentle herb and can be used by both adults and children. It can be taken as a tea, tincture or capsules. The only noted side effect of this herb is sleepiness, which in this use is a very positive effect.

7. California Poppy

This is another commonly used herbal sleeping aid. It promotes relaxation and eases mild anxiety.

8. Skullcap

Skullcap is used for restless leg syndrome, it relieves nervous tensions and helps to renew central nervous system.

9. Hops

Hops relaxes muscle tensions and calm down anxiety. It can be taken in tea or tincture form. Pillows are sometime made of hops. Hops should be avoided if you have depression.
